What you should do if your identity is stolen.

  • Immediately contact bank and credit card companies to report lost or stolen checks, debit and credit cards. Helpful tip: it's smart to have all of your important financial contact information in one place. See if your Online Banking service allows you to list this information online.
  • Contact the police in the area where the theft occurred and file a police report.
  • Place a hold on any bank accounts you suspect might be compromised. Once all approved outstanding transactions have cleared, then close the account.
  • If your personal information has been compromised, consider placing a credit freeze with one of the 3 major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Once one bureau is notified, the information is passed on to the others.
