Easy ways to protect your money every day
You've heard about companies that offer to protect or monitor your finances for you. They say that it takes intense management, which can be overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be. There are ways that you can protect your finances every day with little effort. Below are some of those ways—and ways that EverBank® can help you, too.
Check your financial accounts daily
You know that you should check your monthly statements for charges or fees you don't recognize in your accounts. But with online account access, you can now check your accounts daily or, if you prefer, weekly. Set up a time each day or week that works best for you. Consider checking your accounts first thing in the morning—before your day gets too busy. Save copies of your receipts and match them up to the information you find online. Or compare your checkbook with your account online.
How EverBank can help:
Rather than visiting the website for each of your accounts, you can view all of your accounts—both EverBank and non-EverBank—in one place with the EverBank Online Financial Center. Learn more from our online demo.
Make sure you're on the right site
Some thieves have the ability to make links appear as though they're going to one place—such as to a reputable company—when they're actually going to another. So how can you tell if the financial site you've reached is legitimate? If you're linking to a website from another site, roll over the link and look at the bottom left corner of your web browser. This area of the browser will tell you the actual web address you're accessing. If you're already on a questionable site, look for an “s” after “http” in the web address or a key or lock icon in one of the corners of your browser. These all show that the site is secure. A good rule of thumb is to always type in the web address yourself rather than linking to a site from an email or web page.
How EverBank can help:
EverBank has advanced sign-on requirements for the EverBank Online Financial Center and Mobile Banking, which meet the requirements of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC). So after you sign on, you'll know you're on our secure banking site if you see the picture that you selected when you set up your security preferences in the Online Financial Center. In addition, if you're signing on from a computer that you haven't registered, you'll be presented with two of the four security questions you set up for additional protection.
Be on the lookout for phishing e-mails
Not all e-mails you receive may be coming from whom you'd expect. Some thieves send out phishing e-mails–e-mails disguised to look as though they're coming from a trustworthy source. They typically will ask you to update your account by calling a phone number, sending an e-mail, or visiting a phony website. Be wary of any e-mails that request your financial or personal information. When in doubt, call the phone number provided by your financial institution to check or report such e-mails. More information about phishing can be found at the government site
OnGuard Online.
How EverBank can help:
EverBank will never ask you for personal information in an e-mail. To report an e-mail you think might be a phishing e-mail, please call Customer Care at 888.882.EVER (3837).
Shred unnecessary financial paperwork daily—or go paperless
You likely get promotional offers in the mail every day in addition to all the paper account statements you receive. These can add up quickly, so to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands, shred what you don't need right after you receive the mailing. Many financial institutions provide electronic statements, so consider going paperless by signing up for eStatements.
- Sign on to the EverBank Online Financial Center
- Select the “Service” tab
- Select the “eStatements” tab
- Select the accounts you would like to be included in your eStatement and follow the simple acceptance steps1
File the paperwork you do keep in a safe place every day
As soon as you get paperwork that you need to keep, file it in a safe place before it starts to pile up. That way, it won't get lost or left out where others might see or take it. And in case anything ever happens to your accounts, keep a record of all your financial institutions' contact information in one place, so you can notify them quickly.
How EverBank can help:
You can store and save contact information from other financial institutions inside the secure Online Financial Center. Here are other ways EverBank helps protect your information every day.
